Jaipur

Yesterday we did a little bit of walk/drive by sightseeing of Jaipur.  Today was going to be another day of sightseeing this time going to see the Amber Fort. As many of you will know I’m not that into looking at things but prefer the pulse of the city or being with the people. The group are also going to see gemstone polishing with a chance to purchase gemstones. That could have been dangerous and as I already have a heap of unset stones and lots of jewellery I don’t wear it was best not to go. My shopping spree of yesterday was enough.
So today was a me day, slow start, long shower, toast for breakfast, finished yesterdays blog and then I set off on a walk of the neighbourhood.
Its mainly a commercial area with lots of western shops but more traditional indian stores as well.  Beautiful old restored buildings sit right next to those that have oxidised with age. Smart looking shops next to holes in the wall.

The main street has many many jewellery stores, their windows full of ornate and, for me, over the top jewellery. It is the hindi wedding season here so people are getting decked out for weddings in some hugely ornate and beautiful clothing. All very traditional and by the looks of it very uncomfortable. For someone that refused to have the fuss of a wedding dress it all seems crazy. But tradition is tradition and it suits some but not others.
I dont have photos as the sun was reflecting on shop windows so very hard to shoot but this might give you some idea.
I go to cross the road, dodging the traffic as I go, toots coming from all directions and each toot belonging to a vehicle or tuk tuk also coming from different directions. It truly is crazy. As I was crossing I saw this sign and as I chuckled to myself I nearly tripped on the broken pavement. I could have had another laugh.
Moving on I passed through the Ajmeri Gate, the gate is part of the fortress that runs round the city.

The gate lead me to a market area where I wandered for some time.
Like any usual market the touts were peddling their wares and wouldnt take no for an answer. I was looking for some cool clothing but, despite having seen a few thing that I could have easily bought, I walked off after they quoted me an insane price. Its amazing how quick the price drops when you walk off. So cutting off my nose to spite my face I left with no cool trousers or tops for the sake of less than $10.
The sun was beating down and I was hungry so I headed home, lucky to find my way after moving around a myriad of wee lanes. On the way I pass a number of shops that have connections with dogs. This one, in particular the sign, took my eye.

Well rested I am fed and ready for tonight. A jeep tour of the city at night. Watch this space.
A jeep night tour it was indeed. Firstly a trip to yesterdays tailors to collect our wares that we had ordered the night before. I was disappointed in my outfit for the price I paid I would have expected a decent level of craftsmanship but some bery shoddy sewing had gone into this garment. It wasn’t worth saying anything as thry could not have fixed it over night but the sewing machine might have to come out once I am home. Oh well. We pile back into the jeep and were to a few vantage points around the city so we could see the buildings we had previously seen in daylight. Very pretty but nothing dramatic for me. A stop at a fort was quite pretty with lights strategically placed all round and a visit to the Tempal of Bhomyaji gave us a great overview of the lights. The Tempal is the ‘home’ of a hermit who kindly let us in to see the view. https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1crI9niEgbDbtTUzl8b0z_upnPzIc10Jchttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1DKR1gCi9Xi2qGwqKKF-jwi988tXqz-Xjhttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1Lq_Hw9DxRH9U4K9S0AqPjiqS41T9fL8O

I did enjoy the drive back into the city were standing in the back of the jeep we coukd see some of the beautifully lit buildings close up. A particularly beautiful ons shaped like a tulip was home to a jewellery wholesaler.  https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1TgFlJeCV9VfYFW3LK2O-PMKbNwiH9FAYhttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1_Bop0CrvXwuApmR2yKgi8d2INLHkLDAFhttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1O_Uc_wUCM6NgUbLatvcpeeyhR6WJfIpUhttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1sqACNoArgMlz_dpMGmx4n6TyFGmbzy3shttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1Uel4D-F2XiOMwwbHMmAOi3sNLCbwJPRk
It is a lovely city and I would have liked to spend more time here so I could explore all the nooks and crannies. Tour eventually over and we were dropped off to go to dinner at a tiny place down a little alley. https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=11QeLz0RMlyXYavfmGNs4Ucn7LLZp8Rvhhttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1MYcSqAvar1vkjyMv-esf0-Lai_3oq4JMThe restaurant was on the rooftop and had it not been ready to rain we could have dined under the stars. Under cover but open to the elements on one side we were treated to an amazing electrical storm as we waited for our dinner. My choice of chicken cooked in the tandoor was a great one, warm heady spices covering mouthwatering soft and tender pieces of chicken. Delicious. My kashmiri naan howver had neither the taste of coconut nor a raisin in site so was a disappointment. Sitting round the dinner table was a chance for us all to tell stories and have a few laughs. A really nice bunch of people. Tomorrow we are on the move again further south to a small town. That will be a pleasant change.
